Videos with a cause: Sochi Olympics 2014: We Are All Athletes

Following Russia’s announcement of its anti-LGBT laws last summer, social media discussions and protests on human right-related issues have been intertwined with the Sochi Games.

The U.S. State Department joined these conversations by producing this global public service announcement promoting inclusiveness and diversity.

With the tagline, “We are All Athletes,” the video showcases Olympians, Paralympians, and recreational athletes of various backgrounds, including gender, race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and abilities.

Since its release, online viewers have watched it 30,000 times worldwide through placement on social media platforms and web pages. It was also tweeted by the White House, NSCPress and the U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul. Domestic and international coverage by press and human rights organizations has been abundant and very positive. NBC, Human Rights Campaign and the have been “impressed” with the Department for releasing a video with such a forward-leaning stance.
